Infineon has recently unveiled a new Bluetooth 5.0 module that includes an antenna and offers impressive power consumption figures. The module, called CYW20822-P4TAI040, measures approximately 10 x 20mm and consumes only 1.3mA when receiving signals at -95dBm, and 3mA when transmitting at 0dBm.

The CYW20822-P4TAI040 module has a sleep mode that consumes as little as 2μA while retaining 32kbyte of RAM. It also has a hibernation mode that consumes only 800nA, which increases to 950nA when the wake-up receiver is enabled.

With a maximum transmit power of +4dBm, the module can achieve a range of up to 250m. The receiver sensitivity is also impressive, with a high sensitivity of -101dBm at 125kbit/s. The module supports data rates of 500kbit/s, as well as 1 and 2Mbit/s. Infineon states that the module is pre-certified to FCC, ISED, MIC, and CE regulations.

The CYW20822-P4TAI040 module features a built-in power management system that allows it to start-up from a battery voltage between 1.1 and 3.3V. It can operate down to 1.0V and has a wide temperature range of -45 to +85°C.

On-board peripherals include 8x 16bit PWMs, up to 12x GPIO, a quadrature decoder, an analog comparator, 2x UART, 2x SPI, 2x I2C, and a 10bit ADC with one differential input or three single-ended inputs. The module has a compact size of 20.2 x 10.5 x 2.3 mm and features castellated solder pads for surface-mount soldering.

The CYW20822-P4TAI040 module is powered by a 16MHz Arm Cortex-M0 MCU and comes with 1Mbyte of embedded serial flash pre-programmed with software that provides a command interface for easy configuration and use of the module without the need for programming. Over-the-air updates are also possible.

The on-board track antenna of the module typically has a peak gain of 4.21dBi and a minimum return loss of 10dB. It is worth noting that there is another version of the module, the CYW20822-P4EPI040, which appears to support an external pad antenna.

The CYW20822-P4TAI040 module is expected to find applications in various industries, including industrial IoT, smart homes, asset tracking, beacons, sensors, and medical devices.
