UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is undergoing a transformation with the appointment of a new chief executive from the atomic energy agency. Professor Sir Ian Chapman is set to assume the role of CEO in June, succeeding Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser.
As the largest public research funder in the UK, UKRI manages a substantial budget of £9 billion annually. It encompasses key entities such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Innovate UK, and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Notably, UKRI has played a significant role in the UK's investment in AI research and development, contributing to the country's participation in Horizon Europe, the world's largest research program.

Having served as CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority for ten years, Chapman oversaw the organization's evolution from a research and development-focused entity to a key player in the development of a prototype powerplant. Reflecting on his new role, Chapman emphasized the importance of research and innovation in driving societal and economic prosperity, positioning UKRI as a pivotal player in shaping the nation's future.
“The growth of our economy is a top priority for this government, and leveraging the innovative ideas, talents, and resources across the UK is crucial in achieving this objective and enhancing the lives of people throughout the country,” remarked Chapman. His tenure at UKAEA, a global leader in fusion energy research and innovation, has equipped him with valuable insights to propel the broader UK research and innovation landscape forward.
Science Minister Lord Vallance expressed confidence in Chapman's ability to lead UKRI towards ambitious research endeavors and groundbreaking innovations that will yield tangible benefits for the UK populace. Acknowledging Dame Ottoline Leyser's contributions in steering UKRI through challenging periods, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the UK's reintegration into Horizon Europe, Vallance commended her leadership ahead of her impending departure.
Already a member of UKRI's board, Chapman is poised to assume his new role in the summer. His distinguished background as a Fellow of prestigious scientific societies and a visiting Professor at Durham University underscores his strong credentials to drive UKRI's pursuit of transformative research and innovation initiatives.
