To meet the demand for faster time-to-market solutions, Microchip Technology has unveiled a cutting-edge On-Board Charger (OBC) system. This innovative system incorporates a range of automotive-qualified digital, analog, connectivity, and power devices from Microchip, including the dsPIC33C Digital Signal Controller (DSC), the MCP14C1 isolated SiC gate driver, and mSiC™ MOSFETs packaged in an industry-standard D2PAK-7L XL format.

The primary goal of this OBC system is to enhance efficiency and reliability by harnessing the advanced control capabilities of the dsPIC33 DSC, the high-voltage reinforced isolation of the MCP14C1 gate driver, and the reduced switching losses of the mSiC MOSFETs. Microchip aims to simplify the supply chain for customers by providing essential technologies that support various functions of an OBC, such as communication interfaces, security features, sensors, memory components, and timing mechanisms.

Microchip is committed to expediting system development and testing processes by offering a versatile programmable on-board charger equipped with pre-built software modules for tasks like Power Factor Correction (PFC), DC-DC conversion, communication protocols, and diagnostic algorithms. The software modules embedded in the dsPIC33 DSC are meticulously designed to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability while allowing for customization to meet specific OEM requirements.

Joe Thomsen, the corporate vice president of Microchip’s digital signal controller business unit, highlighted the company's dedication to the E-Mobility sector by establishing a specialized team to support this burgeoning market. In addition to supplying control, gate drive, and power stage components for OBCs, Microchip also offers connectivity solutions, timing mechanisms, sensors, memory products, and security features. As a trusted supplier to OEMs and Tier-1 companies, Microchip provides comprehensive solutions to streamline development processes, including automotive-qualified products, reference designs, software tools, and global technical support.

The dsPIC33C DSC, which is AEC-Q100 certified, boasts a high-performance DSP core, high-resolution PWM modules, and high-speed ADCs, making it an ideal choice for power conversion applications. This device is not only functional and safety-ready but also supports the AUTOSAR® ecosystem, ensuring seamless integration into automotive systems.
