Magnachip Semiconductor, a leading provider of power semiconductor solutions, has recently unveiled its latest innovation in the form of a 1200V 75A Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) designed specifically for solar inverters. This new IGBT, named MBQA75T120RFS, comes in a TO-247PLUS package and is set to revolutionize the solar energy industry with its advanced features and capabilities.

The company has announced plans to commence mass production of the 1200V IGBT in the TO-247PLUS package starting in October. The MBQA75T120RFS is equipped with a wide heat spreader that significantly enhances heat dissipation compared to the traditional TO-247 package. This improvement in thermal management not only boosts power efficiency but also reduces conduction loss by more than 14% when compared to its predecessor, ensuring stable operation even under heavy loads.

One of the key advantages of the new 1200V IGBT is its higher current rating, which allows it to replace two 40A IGBT devices. Additionally, the device features a fast recovery anti-parallel diode that swiftly eliminates residual current, thereby minimizing switching losses. With a maximum operating junction temperature of 175°C, the MBQA75T120RFS guarantees reliable performance in a variety of applications, including solar inverters, converters, and uninterruptible power supply systems.

In a strategic move to expand its global presence, Magnachip has recently established a subsidiary in China, further solidifying its position in the rapidly growing renewable energy market. The company made its foray into the solar inverter segment in 2020 with the introduction of the MBQ40T120QFS, a 1200V 40A device. Subsequently, in 2022, Magnachip introduced the 650V 75A IGBT (MBQ75T65PEH), catering to the evolving needs of the industry.

Market analysts at Omdia project a robust growth trajectory for the discrete IGBT and silicon-based MOSFET sectors within the renewable energy market, with a forecasted compound annual growth rate of 15% from 2024 to 2028. Magnachip's CEO, YJ Kim, expressed confidence in the company's product portfolio, stating, “With this new IGBT product launch, Magnachip’s solar energy power product lineup has been further strengthened and now boasts high-performance IGBTs and MXT MV MOSFETs that satisfy the technical requirements of applications in the solar energy market.”
