Nokia and Axiom Space Collaborate on Space Suit 4G/LTE Network

The partnership between Axiom Space and Nokia is set to revolutionize communication capabilities on the Moon by incorporating high-speed 4G/LTE cellular-network capabilities in the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU). This advancement will support HD video, telemetry data, and voice transmission over multiple kilometers, allowing Artemis III crewmembers to capture real-time video and communicate with mission controllers on Earth as they explore the lunar surface.

Russell Ralston, Axiom Space's executive vice president of extravehicular activity, expressed the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Adding high-speed 4G/LTE network capability on the Moon will serve as a vital bridge linking astronauts to Earth, facilitating crucial data exchange, and enabling high-definition video communication over long distances.” This development will enhance the capabilities of the next-generation spacesuit, providing astronauts with unprecedented connectivity during their missions.

Nokia is gearing up to deploy the first cellular network on the Moon as part of the IM-2 mission by Intuitive Machines, scheduled for delivery to the launch site in 2024. The mission aims to demonstrate how cellular connectivity can revolutionize communications during future lunar or Mars missions. Nokia's Lunar Surface Communications System (LSCS), developed by Nokia Bell Labs, will be deployed during IM-2 and further adapted for integration into the AxEMU spacesuit.

Thierry E. Klein, President of Bell Labs Solutions Research at Nokia, highlighted the importance of advanced networks in space exploration, stating, “Just as astronauts require life support, shelter, and food, they also need advanced networks to communicate and carry out their crucial work. Nokia's expertise in designing global networks, combined with Bell Labs' innovative research, will bring new technologies to address the challenges of space exploration.” This collaboration aims to leverage existing technologies while introducing new innovations tailored to space environments.

The Lunar Surface Communications System (LSCS) comprises a network-in-a-box and device modules integrated into the AxEMU spacesuits. These components have been meticulously engineered to withstand the harsh lunar conditions and the rigors of spaceflight, prioritizing size, weight, and power efficiency. Axiom Space's spacesuits, equipped with these advanced communication capabilities, will not only enhance astronauts' exploration experience but also provide NASA with commercially developed human systems essential for lunar missions.
