The automotive industry is witnessing a groundbreaking shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) with advancements in technology driving innovation. One such innovation is the power box system featuring silicon carbide-based technologies. This integrated module is designed to scale across all power levels, catering to high power and low power traction inverters, making it compatible for all EV categories.
According to Hassane El-Khoury, president and CEO of onsemi, "By offering a complete power system that encompasses the entire power sub-assembly, we provide Volkswagen Group with a single, simplified modular and scalable platform that maximizes efficiency and performance for their vehicle lineup." This approach allows for customization of power needs and the addition of features for different vehicles without compromising on performance, all while reducing costs.
The sub-system from onsemi, based on the EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs, is capable of handling more power in a smaller package, leading to significant reductions in energy losses. With three integrated half-bridge modules mounted on a cooling channel, system efficiency is further improved by effectively managing heat from the semiconductor to the coolant encasement. This results in better performance, improved heat control, and increased efficiency, enabling EVs to drive further on a single charge.
Mr. Dirk Große-Loheide, Member of the Extended Executive Committee Group Procurement and Member of the Board Volkswagen Brand for "Procurement," highlighted the strategic partnership with onsemi for the power box of the traction inverter. He emphasized the verticalized supply chain provided by onsemi, from raw material growth to power box assembly, ensuring a seamless process.
Furthermore, Mr. Till von Bothmer, Senior Vice President VW Group Procurement for Powertrain, praised onsemi for its resilient supply concept with regional silicon carbide fabs across Asia, Europe, and the U.S. This strategic move ensures a continuous supply of the latest SiC generation, enhancing competitiveness and future-proofing Volkswagen Group's EV offerings.
Looking ahead, Volkswagen Group stands to benefit from onsemi's planned investment in expanding its silicon carbide manufacturing in the Czech Republic. This investment will establish an end-to-end production facility in Europe for the traction inverter power system, strengthening the supply chain and streamlining logistics for faster integration into the manufacturing process.
