Ensuring the continued functionality of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) features is crucial for long-term vehicle safety and performance. Manufacturers of vehicles equipped with these features must obtain certification, either from a third party, authority, or through self-certification. A vehicle-in-the-loop (VIL) test is essential to validate the correct operation of all ADAS/AD functions in the end-of-line (EOL) phase and ensure conformity of production (COP) before a vehicle is released from the factory.

Moreover, maintaining proper functionality throughout a vehicle’s lifespan necessitates additional control measures during periodical technical inspections (PTI). To address these requirements effectively, Dürr and Rohde & Schwarz have collaborated on a joint project that integrates the patented x-road curve multi-function roll test stand from Dürr with the new RadEsT radar target simulator and the open-source simulation platform CARLA from Rohde & Schwarz.

The combination of these technologies creates a virtual environment tailored specifically for the camera and radar sensors installed in the test vehicle. This setup allows for the over-the-air (OTA) simulation of various inspection scenarios without physical contact with the vehicle. Critical situations, such as unintended lane departures and sudden braking or lane changes by other vehicles in front of the test vehicle, can be simulated to assess the vehicle's response accurately.

The 4WD x-road curve enables unrestricted driving with steering movements, facilitating cornering maneuvers without altering the test vehicle. Laser measurement technology tracks the front wheels’ position and steering angle, while swiveling front double roller units automatically adjust for any angular differences to maintain the vehicle's centering on the test stand, even at high speeds.

On the other hand, the RadEsT radar target simulator developed by Rohde & Schwarz offers exceptional resilience to external factors, ensuring consistent performance in various production and workshop environments. Its precise and repeatable measurements make it a valuable tool for conducting accurate assessments under real-world conditions. Additionally, its compact and lightweight design allows for easy integration at a cost-effective price point.

Furthermore, the open-source platform CARLA provides vehicle manufacturers and PTI organizations with flexibility, cost-saving opportunities, and a wide range of scenario selections. The recent upgrade of the CARLA simulator to Unreal Engine 5 is anticipated to enhance modeling, simulation realism, and performance, particularly for over-the-air camera simulation via monitors.

By leveraging the patented x-road curve multi-function roll test stand, the innovative radar target simulator, and the open-source platform CARLA, manufacturers can evaluate the full functionality of automated and autonomous vehicles cost-effectively. This comprehensive approach ensures proper operation during production and throughout the vehicle's entire lifespan.
