The vision of a quantum internet connecting quantum devices worldwide is hindered by distance limitations within ground networks, restricting quantum information exchange to just a few hundred kilometers. While satellites offer a promising solution for achieving global connectivity, a comprehensive architecture for a global quantum internet is still undefined. The Qu-STAR initiative aims to address this challenge and strengthen the Netherlands' position in the emerging field by leveraging the country's expertise in quantum technology, free space optics, and photonics.

Ground networks, limited by their ability to transmit quantum information only over short distances, are inadequate for establishing global connections. Satellites present a viable solution, but the design of a complete global quantum internet infrastructure is yet to be realized.
TNO, in collaboration with Airbus Central Research and Technology, is taking on the task of defining this comprehensive design. By engaging with stakeholders globally and contributing to initiatives like the Quantum Internet Alliance and its Special Interest Group on Space, they aim to create an open framework that benefits the entire quantum community. The expertise of TNO in optics for laser satellite communications, quantum technology, and novel ICT infrastructures, combined with Airbus' proficiency in quantum technology and aerospace applications, positions the Qu-STAR initiative for success.
The Qu-STAR project is a direct result of the letter of intent signed by Airbus and TNO last November at the Conférence Érasme Descartes in the presence of the ambassadors of France and the Netherlands. Kees Buijsrogge, director of TNO Space, emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, stating, "Our goal is to advance technologies and make a significant impact in achieving a global quantum internet. We believe that a collaborative, open approach will yield the best results, and welcome other organizations to join us in this initiative."
