Qualcomm Technologies has successfully finalized the acquisition of the 4G IoT technology developed by Sequans in France. This strategic move is expected to enhance Qualcomm's existing portfolio of purpose-built connectivity solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT) through licensing agreements. The acquisition comes shortly after a failed bid by Renesas Electronics, allowing Sequans to address its financial challenges and shift its focus towards advancing 5G technologies like Redcap.

The integration of Sequans' 4G technologies into Qualcomm's product lineup is seen as a significant step towards providing reliable and energy-efficient cellular connectivity solutions for industrial IoT applications. Nakul Duggal, the group general manager of automotive, industrial, embedded IoT, and cloud computing at Qualcomm Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. Duggal stated, "We are pleased to add Sequans' 4G IoT technology into Qualcomm's broad product portfolio, adding to our robust, low-power solutions for dependable and optimized cellular connectivity for industrial IoT applications."

Georges Karam, the CEO of Sequans, also shared his excitement about the transaction with Qualcomm. Karam highlighted the importance of the deal in validating the strength of Sequans' technology and ensuring continued support for customers using their 4G portfolio. He emphasized the company's commitment to innovation, mentioning their upcoming 5G Redcap/eRedCap technology as part of their comprehensive portfolio that includes low-power LTE-M/NB-IoT and LTE Cat 1bis.

The acquisition is expected to bring significant benefits to customers of both Qualcomm and Sequans. With a focus on delivering cutting-edge IoT solutions, Qualcomm aims to strengthen its position as a leader in edge intelligence. The perpetual license retained by Sequans allows them to continue utilizing and advancing the acquired technologies, ensuring ongoing support and innovation for their customers.

Overall, the completion of this acquisition marks a milestone for both companies, positioning them well in the competitive IoT market. Qualcomm's commitment to innovation and Sequans' technological expertise are set to drive further advancements in cellular connectivity solutions, benefiting industrial IoT applications and paving the way for future developments in 5G technology.
