SiTime, a leading provider of timing solutions, has introduced the industry’s first fully integrated clock system-on-a-chip (ClkSoC) with built-in fault monitoring mechanisms tailored for automotive designs. The Chorus Automotive Clock Generator, developed by SiTime, incorporates a micromachined MEMS resonator, oscillator, and advanced safety features into a single package. This integration, known as FailSafe, streamlines system timing architecture for multiple clock trees and expedites functional safety development time by up to six weeks.

The clock generator, designed for autonomous driving (AD) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), offers enhanced performance and critical diagnostic coverage. Sumeet Kulkarni, Director of Product Marketing, Automotive at SiTime, highlights the significance of this innovation in bridging data center technology with automotive applications, ensuring reliable operation in extreme temperature conditions.

In the realm of automotive safety, the Chorus Automotive Clock Generator plays a pivotal role in mitigating potential failures that could lead to catastrophic consequences. By proactively monitoring clock signals and swiftly reporting any anomalies, the system can prevent downstream failures and maintain a safe operational state. This capability aligns with the stringent requirements of Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) standards, ensuring high levels of safety and reliability in critical automotive systems.

Traditionally, timing networks relied on standalone oscillators that lacked synchronization and diagnostic capabilities. With the introduction of Chorus Automotive, up to four differential or eight single-ended oscillators can be replaced, significantly reducing the footprint on circuit boards and eliminating impedance mismatch issues. The programmable nature of each clock output allows for tailored configurations to meet specific system requirements, enhancing overall performance and efficiency.

Moreover, the Chorus clock generator offers a wide range of features, including programmable frequency, low phase jitter, and multiple output options. Its FailSafe technology enables rapid fault detection and reporting, leading to a substantial reduction in failure rates and improved diagnostic capabilities. By integrating multiple clocks into a single compact device, engineers can optimize power consumption, reduce costs, and maximize board space utilization.
