Panasonic has recently unveiled a groundbreaking modular nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery system designed to serve as an auxiliary power supply for trains. This innovative system is set to revolutionize the railway industry by offering a compact and scalable solution that enhances efficiency and performance while minimizing downtime.

The Panasonic Ni-MH battery system features a sleek and adaptable design that can be easily mounted on vehicles, saving valuable space and allowing for greater flexibility in installation. With a focus on longevity, this system reduces the frequency of replacements, ensuring a reliable power source for extended periods.

At its core, the basic 1200Wh module offers two options: 6V, 200Ah, and 12V, 100Ah, which can be stacked in blocks of eight to deliver 100A at 96V. Additionally, its slim form factor adds to its appeal, making it a versatile choice for various train configurations.

One of the key advantages of the new Ni-MH battery system is its classification, or rather lack thereof, as class 9 dangerous goods. This distinction simplifies transportation requirements, streamlining logistics and operational processes for railroad companies. Moreover, the system is free of environmentally harmful substances like lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), aligning with Panasonic Energy's commitment to sustainability.

Equipped with a remote monitoring function and designed to be maintenance-free, the Ni-MH battery system offers railway operators a hassle-free solution that enhances operational reliability and safety. By eliminating the need for electrolyte refilling, this system provides a user-friendly alternative to traditional battery systems, including those powered by Nickel Cadmium batteries.

"This system underscores our dedication to developing sustainable and efficient solutions for the transportation industry," stated Oliver Sonnemann, head of the Panasonic Energy Division. "We are confident that it will elevate the performance, safety, and environmental impact of railway operations, setting a new standard for power supply systems in the sector."
