STMicroelectronics has introduced a new line of serial EEPROMs with a unique 128-bit read-only ID (UID) to meet the growing market demand for efficient product recognition, tracking, and repairability. This groundbreaking feature is designed to assist original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in utilizing the UID for product identification and clone detection, offering a cost-effective solution compared to basic secure elements.

Aside from the standard EEPROM user-memory space for parameter storage and data logging, the UID is preprogrammed at the ST factory and permanently locked. This ensures that the device retains its factory-programmed identity from sourcing and manufacturing to field deployment, maintenance, and eventual disposal. The UID plays a crucial role in enabling seamless traceability, facilitating reliable analysis, and simplifying equipment reprocessing and repair processes.

The M24xxx-U series, initially available in 64 Kbit and 128 Kbit variants, is built on ST’s proprietary CMOS EEPROM technology. This technology guarantees exceptional reliability, boasting an industry-leading four million write cycles and 200 years of data retention, all while maintaining minimal power consumption. These EEPROM memories come in the industry-standard SO8N package and support a wide operating voltage range of 1.7 V to 5.5 V for easy integration.

Moreover, the devices in the series are compatible with multiple I²C bus modes, including 100 kHz (standard mode), 400 kHz (fast mode), and 1 MHz (fast mode plus). They also support random and sequential read modes, along with a comprehensive write-protect mode for the entire memory array, ensuring both flexibility and security in operation. Enhanced ESD/latch-up protection, featuring 4 kV Human Body Model ESD protection, further enhances the reliability of these serial EEPROMs across various applications.

With memory sizes ranging from 32 Kbit to 2 Mbit, the new series of serial EEPROMs from STMicroelectronics offers OEMs a versatile solution for product identification, tracking, and maintenance. The inclusion of the UID feature provides a valuable tool for clone detection and versioning, enhancing the overall capabilities of these EEPROMs. ST’s commitment to reliability and innovation is evident in the high-quality CMOS EEPROM technology used in these devices, ensuring long-term data retention and operational efficiency.
