Under the newly announced contract, Sivers Semiconductors will be responsible for designing and developing cutting-edge 5G long-range antenna modules that will operate within the 57-71 GHz license exempt band. These modules are set to provide high-speed broadband communication links specifically tailored for track-to-train applications. The revenue generated from this contract is expected to be fully recognized by the year 2024.
Railway operators have long grappled with the challenge of enhancing Wi-Fi quality for passengers, often hindered by technical limitations and high costs associated with delivering reliable broadband services. This strategic partnership between Sivers Semiconductors and Blu Wireless aims to address these issues by enabling the provision of longer links that support multi-gigabit, dependable 5G communications. This advancement is crucial in meeting the evolving demands of modern high-speed rail systems, ensuring seamless internet access even at speeds exceeding 300 km/h.
Anders Storm, the CEO of Sivers Semiconductors, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "The contract between Blu Wireless and Sivers UK business unit underscores our longstanding partnership. By combining Sivers Semiconductors' state-of-the-art RF technology with Blu Wireless's advanced baseband processing capabilities, we are revolutionizing high-speed connectivity within the transportation sector, transforming the way passengers and operators experience connectivity while on the move."
The innovative technology currently under development promises gigabit data throughput, enhanced security features, and cost-effective deployment options. Sivers Semiconductors has already initiated the deployment of track-to-train high-speed broadband communications using existing products on the South Western Railway (SWR) and in the USA, such as the CALTRAIN commuter rail line connecting San Francisco to San Jose.
Blu Wireless, on the other hand, has received funding from Innovate UK to spearhead a project focused on pioneering advancements in telecommunication technologies for the rail industry. Additionally, the company recently secured an undisclosed investment from Maven Capital Partners to further promote sustainable economic growth and drive innovation within the sector.
Mark Barrett, Chief Commercial Officer of Blu Wireless, emphasized the significance of the collaboration with Sivers Semiconductors, stating, "Our partnership will leverage the combined expertise of both companies to deliver cutting-edge 5G mmWave connectivity tailored for the rail industry. This innovative technology ensures that passengers can enjoy uninterrupted, high-speed internet access even on the fastest trains, marking a significant advancement in enhancing the travel experience and supporting the digital transformation of rail networks globally."
