MDA Space has made a significant decision in choosing the Airbus Sparkwing solar panels for its newest software-defined satellite. This collaboration marks a milestone in the advancement of satellite technology and space exploration.
Airbus has been entrusted with the task of supplying 200 Airbus Sparkwing solar panels for the MDA Aurora satellite, which is scheduled for launch in the near future. The solar arrays will be manufactured at Airbus' state-of-the-art production facility in Leiden, the Netherlands.
The Sparkwing solar array for the MDA Aurora satellite is the largest of its kind, featuring two wings with five panels each, providing a photovoltaic area exceeding 30 square meters. This cutting-edge technology showcases the commitment to innovation and efficiency in the aerospace industry.
The MDA Aurora supply chain will play a crucial role in facilitating product deliveries for Telesat's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, Lightspeed. This global network aims to deliver high-quality connectivity services to customers worldwide, revolutionizing communication and connectivity.
According to Airbus, the Sparkwing solar array is the first commercially available off-the-shelf solution designed specifically for small satellites. Originally optimized for Low Earth Orbit missions requiring power levels between 100W and 2000W, the Sparkwing has proven to be versatile and reliable.
With over thirty different panel dimensions available, the Sparkwing solar arrays can be configured into deployable wings with varying panel numbers, catering to different power requirements. Its adaptability and efficiency make it a preferred choice for missions to LEO and beyond.
In addition to power generation, the Sparkwing solar array offers high stiffness, minimal integration effort, and precise tolerances, ensuring seamless integration into satellite systems. This comprehensive solution underscores Airbus' commitment to delivering high-performance products for the space industry.
Rob Postma, Managing Director of Airbus in the Netherlands, expressed confidence in the industrialized Sparkwing solar array product, emphasizing its suitability for constellation projects and space connectivity initiatives. The collaboration between MDA Space and Airbus signifies a step forward in advancing space-based technologies.
