Quantum technology has been evolving through 2024 to focus on scalable, error corrected, fault tolerant computing systems.
There is still a wide range of technologies, from superconducting Josephson junctions through neutral ions and ion traps to diamond and photonics, all aiming to produce utility-scale and portable quantum machines. European semiconductor companies, particularly Infineon Technologies and STMicroelectronics, are at the heart of the developments as the industry moves into 2025 through deals with established firms such as Quantinuum and emerging developers such as Qobly.
The integration of quantum computers and AI is also a key trend for 2025. AI can dramatically simplify the development and programming of quantum machines, and companies such as Quantum Brilliance are installing room temperature diamond quantum machines alongside supercomputers in Germany.
The UK’s quantum testbed, which opened in October, will see a range of quantum technologies installed for evaluation.
