Foundry TSMC has made a significant announcement regarding its investment in semiconductor manufacturing in the US. The company revealed that it will be spending an additional US$100 billion on top of the US$65 billion already committed to building wafer fabs in Phoenix, Arizona.

CC Wei, the chairman and CEO of TSMC, traveled to the White House to make the announcement alongside President Donald Trump. This announcement came just before the US administration imposed tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, with Taiwan being excluded from the latest tariff regime.

The US$100 billion investment will be utilized to construct three wafer fabs, two advanced packaging facilities, and a major R&D center. This marks the largest single foreign direct investment in US history, although specific locations for the expenditure were not disclosed.

According to TSMC, this investment is expected to generate 40,000 construction jobs over the next four years and create tens of thousands of electronic and semiconductor engineering positions over the next decade. The plan aims to bolster US leadership in AI by supplying domestically manufactured chips to key customers such as Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and Qualcomm.

“With the success of our first fab in Arizona, along with needed government support and strong customer partnerships, we intend to expand our US semiconductor manufacturing investment by an additional $100 billion, bringing our total planned investment to $165 billion,” said Wei in a statement.

The announcement from TSMC comes shortly after Intel announced a delay in its own plans to enhance manufacturing capacity in the US. Additionally, Apple, a significant customer of TSMC, recently made a substantial commitment to US spending.

TSMC currently operates a wafer fab in Phoenix with 3,000 employees, which has been in volume production since late 2024. The company also has a mature wafer fab in Camas, Washington, showcasing its continued presence and investment in the US semiconductor industry.
