Semi has introduced a groundbreaking technology in the form of the world’s first multi-level buck regulator, poised to transform the landscape of mobile battery charger designs. This innovative capacitor-based multi-level technology boasts high efficiency and rapid battery charging capabilities, all within a low-profile application less than 1mm in height. Operating across a wide input range from 4.5V to 18V, the converter caters to USB and wireless charging standards, making it a versatile solution for various charging needs.
Specifically, the technology offers a 4-level buck mode for higher input voltages and a 3-level buck mode for mid-to-low input voltages. Moreover, it can function in fixed ratio, capacitor divider mode with divider ratios of 2 and 3 when dealing with a programmable power source (PPS). With a current delivery of up to 6A per device and the ability to parallel devices for faster charging times, the system ensures efficient power delivery and swift battery charging across different charging standards.
pSemi, a subsidiary of Murata, is set to showcase this cutting-edge design at the upcoming 2025 Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) in the US. Alongside the multi-level buck regulator, the company has also unveiled the PE24111, a 3.3Vin, two-stage regulator capable of supplying up to 20A, and the PE25213 divide by 2 and 3 capacitor divider, expanding pSemi’s range of high-efficiency buck regulators tailored for low-profile applications.
The PE24111 features a two-phase interleaved charge pump followed by an interleaved buck regulator stage, reducing the reliance on inductance for efficient solutions in compact form-factors. With the ability to adjust the output voltage between 0.35 and 0.85V, the PE24111 is ideal for various applications such as point-of-load regulators, optical transceiver modules, and ASICs, offering flexibility and high performance in a small footprint.
On the other hand, the PE25213 supports an input voltage range of 5.7V to 15V in divide-by-2 mode and 8.4V to 15V in divide-by-3 mode. Serving as a front-end converter for two- or three-cell battery inputs, the PE25213 enhances system efficiency and runtime by converting to a 1-1.5S output for downstream regulators. Its unique auto-switch mode prevents under-voltage lockout events during heavy system loading, ensuring stable operation.
pSemi’s commitment to advancing power conversion technologies is evident in the introduction of these innovative solutions. The PE24111 and PE25213 not only address the power challenges faced by customers in low-profile, high-energy density applications but also set new standards in the industry. With these products now available for sampling, pSemi continues to push the boundaries of what is achievable in power management, promising a brighter future for efficient and reliable charging solutions.
