STMicroelectronics has introduced a new 240MHz GaN-based flyback converter in a SOIC16 package, catering to cost-conscious applications. The VIPerGaN65D quasi-resonant offline converter features a 700V gallium nitride (GaN) transistor and optimized gate driver, making wide-bandgap technology more accessible with typical protection features integrated.

The GaN transistor in the VIPerGaN65D operates at up to 240kHz, minimizing switching losses and enabling the use of a small flyback transformer, compact passive components, and a low-cost circuit board. This design choice allows for a more efficient and cost-effective solution for various applications.

Unlike other members of the VIPerGaN family, the VIPerGaN65D is packaged in a traditional SO16n (narrow) outline, deviating from the 5mm x 6mm DFN package. This packaging decision provides flexibility and compatibility with existing designs while maintaining the benefits of GaN technology.

STMicroelectronics has developed the first 50W quasi-resonant ZVS GaN converter design with the VIPerGaN65D. Operating with zero-voltage switching, the converter can adjust the valley-synchronization delay to ensure optimal performance of the GaN transistor. Dynamic blanking time and feedforward compensation further enhance efficiency across varying input voltages and load conditions.

The VIPerGaN65D offers a current limit of 3.5A, supporting power outputs up to 65W for universal input voltage ranges from 85V to 265V. By designing for a narrower input range of 185V-265V, the converter can achieve a maximum power rating of 85W. Additionally, the standby power consumption is below 30mW, meeting stringent energy efficiency standards.

With its versatile capabilities, the VIPerGaN65D is suitable for a wide range of applications, including fast chargers, adapters, household appliances, consumer electronics, lighting systems, and more. Its integrated current-sensing power MOSFET ensures accurate current monitoring for efficiency optimization and system protection.

The VIPerGaN65D incorporates a comprehensive set of protection features, including overcurrent protection, output overvoltage protection, input-voltage feed-forward compensation, and thermal shutdown. These features, coupled with auto-restart functionality and frequency jitter for EMI suppression, enhance the reliability and safety of the converter.

For expedited power-supply projects utilizing the VIPerGaN65D, STMicroelectronics offers the EVLVIPGAN65DF reference design. This reference design, combined with secondary synchronous rectification controlled by ST’s SRK1001 adaptive controller, delivers a fully protected 24V, 65W power supply with peak efficiency exceeding 93%.

The VIPerGaN65D is now available in the SOIC16 narrow-body package, with pricing starting at $1.16 per unit for orders of 1000 pieces. This accessibility and affordability make the VIPerGaN65D an attractive solution for designers seeking efficient and reliable power conversion in their applications.
