Infineon Technologies has introduced its latest 80V MOSFET into the DC-DC bus converter stage of an AI server platform, aiming to enhance efficiency. This move results in a modest efficiency increase of approximately 0.4 percent, translating to saving about 4.3 W per kW of load. While this may seem insignificant on an individual basis, the cumulative effect is substantial when applied across server racks or entire datacentres. Extrapolating this to a hypothetical hyperscale datacentre with 2,000 racks could yield over 1.2 MWh in energy savings per hour.
With the continuous advancement of graphics processing units (GPUs), the power demands at the board level are also escalating. Intermediate bus converters (IBCs) play a crucial role in AI data centres by efficiently converting input voltages to lower bus voltages. This conversion is essential for enhancing energy efficiency, power density, and thermal performance within these data centres.

The OptiMOS 6 80V power MOSFETs are packaged in a compact 5×6 mm² dual side cooling (DSC) package, supporting hard switching topologies and delivering high energy efficiency by minimizing conduction losses. The dual side cooling feature of the package facilitates improved thermal management and higher power density, addressing the space constraints prevalent in AI server environments.
Approximately 30 percent of the heat generated on the MOSFET die is dissipated through the top, reducing the amount of heat transferred to the PCB. This design characteristic enables the PCB to operate at lower temperatures for enhanced reliability. Alternatively, it allows the MOSFET to handle more power, thereby increasing power density within the system.
The integration of the 80V MOSFET from Infineon Technologies into AI server platforms marks a significant step towards optimizing energy efficiency and power management in data centres.
