The Avnu Alliance has recently introduced a new, streamlined certification program tailored for Ethernet TSN network switches utilized across various market segments. This initiative aims to support certification for devices based on the IEEE’s SA’s 802.1.BA profile for Audio Video Bridging (AVB) within the IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) framework, which encompasses a series of IEEE 802.1 standards. The certification program was initially launched in 2021, with a TSN component certification program following suit last month.

The certification process has undergone significant revisions, now adopting a functional approach that primarily evaluates a switch's performance within a functional system. This approach goes beyond assessing conformance with IEEE specifications, ensuring that devices meet the necessary standards for optimal functionality within Ethernet networks.

One of the key benefits of this certification is that it enables network product manufacturers across different industries to verify that their devices comply with core AVB/TSN standards. These standards are crucial for enhancing synchronization, reducing latency, and improving reliability within switched Ethernet networks. The introduction of TSN brings forth additional features like frame pre-emption, per-stream filtering, and time-aware scheduling, expanding support for a wide array of applications beyond just audio and video.

AVB and TSN standards play a pivotal role in enabling precise timing within devices, facilitating the support of low-jitter media clocks and ensuring accurate synchronization of multiple streams. This synchronization allows different types of traffic to seamlessly coexist on a single network, enhancing overall network efficiency and performance.

The Avnu 802.1BA Switch Certification program is set to kick off with an extensive Pilot Phase, during which conditional certifications will be granted to eligible devices. Following this phase, newly certified devices will undergo a final certification once the full set of tests is established, guaranteeing the highest standards of performance and reliability. Industry leaders have expressed their support for this program, recognizing its importance in driving innovation and collaboration within the AVB/TSN ecosystem.
