ClearSpace, an innovative in-orbit services company, has recently unveiled more information about its contract with the UK Space Agency for the REFUEL.ME study, a groundbreaking project scheduled to continue until September 2024.
The primary objective of the study is to define essential mission requirements, according to ClearSpace, which will lead to the initial design of the servicer satellite and an evaluation of the market potential.
As part of the project, the selected servicer is anticipated to conduct the first refuelling operation on the UK National Debris Removal Mission, a concept also being developed by ClearSpace, before moving on to refuel other commercial satellites.
This refuelling process plays a crucial role in extending the lifespan of satellites, allowing these valuable assets to remain operational for longer periods, thereby reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing the creation of space debris resulting from defunct satellites.
The task of developing refuelling services will be undertaken by a consortium based in the UK, as announced by ClearSpace. The consortium will include OrbitFab, a specialist in refuelling systems, the Satellite Applications Catapult, with expertise in validating complex Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) in a dedicated testing facility, and Know.space, a company specializing in commercial analysis.
"Traditionally, satellites have been designed as single-use devices, incapable of refuelling and with mission lifespans ending when the satellite loses its maneuverability," stated Ray Fielding, Head of Space Sustainability at the UK Space Agency.
"This funding demonstrates the UK Space Agency's commitment to advancing UK capabilities in performing in-orbit tasks like refuelling, showcasing leadership in promoting more sustainable space operations."
The UK Space Agency has allocated £2 million to support UK industry in conducting research and development for refuelling missions through a series of feasibility studies.
"We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with the UK Space Agency and our industrial partners to leverage the wealth of knowledge and expertise available in the UK for the development of our cutting-edge mission concept. This mission will not only provide an essential service in the future but will also contribute to addressing the escalating challenge of space debris," expressed Rory Holmes, ClearSpace's UK Managing Director.
