Eaton, a global power management company, has recently made headlines with its acquisition of the UK-based thermal monitoring firm Exertherm. While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, this strategic move signifies Eaton's foray into continuous thermal monitoring for critical electrical equipment in key markets, particularly data centers.
Exertherm, located near London, has been at the forefront of continuous temperature monitoring (CTM) technology for over a decade, catering to the needs of Industry 4.0 and the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Their monitoring systems, seamlessly integrated into low-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear, busway, power distribution units (PDU), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and motor control centers, have been deployed globally, setting new standards in reliability and efficiency.
One of the standout applications of Exertherm's technology is evident in the low-voltage transformer kit, which leverages CTM to enhance reliability by detecting potential faults a remarkable 70% more frequently than traditional periodic inspections. Sensor looms, connected to a data card via a cable, collect and transmit temperature data using Modbus 485. The data card, housed in an external enclosure, triggers alarms upon detecting any faults, providing real-time monitoring and alerts.
Mike Yelton, President of the Americas Region, Electrical Sector at Eaton, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "Exertherm is renowned for its innovative technology and reliable solutions tailored for data centers and various other applications. We are excited about the prospect of integrating thermal monitoring solutions more extensively into our Brightlayer software suites, empowering our customers to optimize operations and drive business performance through data-driven insights."
With this acquisition, Eaton aims to strengthen its position in the thermal monitoring market and enhance its offerings to meet the evolving needs of customers across industries. By combining Eaton's expertise in power management with Exertherm's cutting-edge CTM technology, the partnership is poised to deliver advanced solutions that drive efficiency, reliability, and safety in critical electrical infrastructure.
