The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) Governing Board recently convened to discuss and update its Work Program, introducing a new objective focused on AI Factories. This strategic decision was made in response to the EU Regulation 2024/1732, which broadened the EuroHPC JU's scope to include the acquisition and operation of AI-optimized supercomputers. These supercomputers are intended to cater to a diverse range of users, including startups, small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), industry players, academia, and the public sector.

The European Commission's recognition of the need for enhanced support in the field of AI research and innovation further underscored the importance of this initiative. The Commission emphasized the importance of fostering "responsible" AI development within the region and leveraging the bloc's existing HPC capacity to provide trustworthy AI resources for training models. This shift in focus towards AI Factories signifies a proactive approach to nurturing a robust AI ecosystem within Europe.

AI Factories are envisioned as dynamic ecosystems that bring together essential components such as computational power, data resources, and skilled talent. The objective is not merely to make supercomputers accessible but to create an environment conducive to developing cutting-edge generative AI models. By fostering collaboration and innovation within these AI Factories, stakeholders aim to drive advancements in AI applications across various sectors.

One of the primary goals of establishing AI Factories is to serve as hubs for driving progress in AI technologies across key domains. These domains span a wide range of industries, including healthcare, energy, manufacturing, and meteorology. By facilitating the convergence of expertise and resources in these specialized hubs, the EuroHPC JU seeks to accelerate the development and deployment of AI solutions that address real-world challenges.

The EuroHPC JU's commitment to promoting collaboration and innovation in AI through the AI Factories initiative reflects a strategic investment in Europe's digital future. By leveraging the collective expertise and resources of diverse stakeholders, these AI hubs are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of AI technologies and applications. As Europe continues to position itself as a global leader in AI research and development, initiatives like AI Factories are instrumental in driving progress and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
