GlobalFoundries has recently made a significant acquisition, obtaining an intellectual property portfolio of power GaN technology and key staff members from Tagore Technology in the United States. This strategic move, made for an undisclosed sum, is set to bolster GF's position in the semiconductor industry.

Tagore Technology, established in 2011, operates design centers in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and Kolkata, India. The talented power staff from both locations will now become part of the GlobalFoundries team. Despite the acquisition, Tagore Technology will continue to market its GaN RF power amplifiers and switches.

According to Niels Anderskouv, chief business officer at GF, "We are committed to being the foundation of our customers' power applications today and for decades to come. With this acquisition, GF takes another step toward accelerating the availability of GaN and empowering our customers to build the next generation of power management solutions."

Amitava Das, co-founder and chief operating officer of Tagore Technology, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, "The team and I are excited to join GlobalFoundries to increase our focus on market-leading IP that will help address power design challenges and support the continued evolution of automotive, industrial, and AI datacenter power delivery systems."

In February 2024, GlobalFoundries secured $1.5 billion in direct funding under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, with a portion of the investment aimed at enabling high-volume manufacturing of critical technologies like GaN. This funding will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for power-efficient semiconductors.

By combining their manufacturing capabilities with the expertise of the Tagore team, GF is well-positioned to offer GaN solutions to customers working on power chips for AI systems, particularly in edge or IoT devices where minimizing power consumption is essential for efficiency.

Jitendra Chaddah, vice president and India country head at GF, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, saying, "GlobalFoundries is at the forefront of technological advancements. With Tagore Technology joining the GF India team, we will further enhance our tech capabilities, particularly in emerging areas like GaN."

Furthermore, Tagore Technology recently announced a partnership with Inventchip to introduce a new compact 500 W power supply reference design. This innovative design aims to enhance efficiency in various applications such as eBikes, adapters, servers, power tool chargers, and telecommunication power supplies.

The collaboration between Tagore and Inventchip resulted in the development of a compact, robust, and cost-effective solution utilizing GaN technology. This partnership underscores the commitment of both companies to drive innovation in the power electronics industry.
