HP sets up AI lab with assets of Humane

HP Inc (HPI) has made a significant move in the realm of artificial intelligence by acquiring the assets of startup Humane for a substantial $116 million. This acquisition is aimed at establishing an AI lab within the company, known as HP IQ. The foundation of HP IQ will be built upon the engineering team responsible for creating the Humane AI pin, a cutting-edge consumer device designed for 'ambient computing.'

The Humane AI pin is a revolutionary product that combines a camera, microphone, and an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with on-chip AI capabilities. Additionally, it features a cellular link to AI services like real-time translation. This innovative technology represents the growing trend of ambient computing, where devices seamlessly integrate into our surroundings to enhance our daily experiences.

As part of the deal, HP Inc will also gain access to the CosmOS operating system and over 300 patents and patent applications owned by Humane. This strategic acquisition is intended to propel HPI, the printer division of the company following its split from HP Enterprise in 2015, towards becoming a more experience-focused organization.

Despite the promising potential of the Humane AI pin, sales were hindered by factors such as a recall of its battery charging case, a high price point, and lukewarm reviews. Discussions between Humane and HP had been ongoing since June of the previous year, culminating in the acquisition agreement. The deal is set to be finalized by the end of February, marking the transition of Humane's servers and the availability of its domain name for sale.

According to Tuan Tran, President of Technology and Innovation at HP, the investment in Humane will accelerate the development of a new generation of devices capable of seamlessly integrating AI capabilities both locally and in the cloud. This collaboration will leverage Humane's AI platform, Cosmos, and its team of talented engineers to create an intelligent ecosystem across all HP devices, ranging from AI-powered PCs to smart printers and connected conference rooms.

Co-founders of Humane, Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, expressed their enthusiasm about joining HP during this transformative period in the industry. They believe that HP's global reach and operational expertise, combined with their design-centric approach and engineering prowess, will redefine workforce productivity and shape the future of intelligent experiences.
