Imec, the Spanish government, and the regional government of Andalusia have recently come together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of setting up a specialized 300mm IC pilot line in Malaga, Andalusia. This collaboration marks a significant step towards advancing semiconductor technology in the region.

The primary objective of this new facility is to complement Imec's existing 300mm advanced CMOS process line in Leuven, Belgium. By focusing on developing new 300mm processes and incorporating materials that are currently challenging to integrate with standard CMOS processes, the facility is poised to drive innovation in the semiconductor industry.

One of the key goals of the new pilot line is to address the industry's growing demand for research and development, prototyping, and the eventual production of cutting-edge technologies. By leveraging the advantages of 300mm semiconductor process technology, the facility aims to explore new applications in various sectors such as health care, life sciences, photonics, augmented and virtual reality, and precision sensing.

Furthermore, the facility will work in tandem with Imec's expertise and infrastructure in Leuven to introduce non-standard processes that are currently incompatible with traditional semiconductor manufacturing methods. This strategic collaboration between the two sites is expected to foster a culture of innovation and knowledge exchange.

As negotiations progress, the focus will shift towards establishing a robust public-private cooperation model involving Imec, the Spanish government, and the government of Andalusia. The commitment from all parties to support the construction of the new facility, including the procurement of advanced equipment, underscores their dedication to fostering a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem.

Imec will play a pivotal role in managing the operations of the pilot line, providing essential knowledge and technology, and facilitating access to its extensive global academic and industrial partner network. By creating this interconnected facility that complements Imec's existing pilot line in Leuven, the initiative aims to unlock the innovation potential in Spain and Andalusia, propelling the region to the forefront of semiconductor research and development.
