Infineon, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, has received clearance from the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems (IKS) for its upcoming TC4x automotive microcontrollers to safely process artificial intelligence (AI).

"Embedded AI is increasingly crucial for real-time applications that prioritize safety," stated Infineon. "However, this trend also brings about new requirements and standards that must be adhered to throughout the entire product lifecycle."

The TC4x family features a 'PPU' (parallel processing unit), an AI-accelerator designed to meet ASIL-D compliance standards. It is tailored for applications such as motor control, battery management, vehicle motion control, and siren detection.

Fraunhofer IKS has introduced a set of AI-specific safety criteria known as Safe AI, which is based on ISO PAS 8800. This framework evaluates the reliability of AI in terms of robustness, data utility, operational design domain (ODD), and environmental factors.

Infineon's TC4x microcontrollers have undergone evaluation against the Safe AI standards set by Fraunhofer IKS. "We are thrilled that our microcontroller has successfully completed the Safe AI assessment conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Intelligence," expressed Thomas Boehm, Vice President of Microcontrollers at Infineon. "Integrating secure and dependable AI capabilities into automotive microcontroller families is crucial for enhancing vehicle performance, safety, and convenience."
