Eggtronic, a leading innovator in wireless power technology, has introduced a groundbreaking evaluation board that leverages a RISC-V controller to enable the rapid prototyping of efficient wireless power transfer designs for low-power applications. Known as the Eggtronic WaveEgg LP EVB, this cutting-edge solution streamlines design processes and reduces component count, making it ideal for small form factor, cable-free charging of low-power devices up to 6W.
Built on Eggtronic's proprietary high-frequency WaveEgg architecture, the EVB optimizes performance and efficiency while minimizing component count and form factor in high-performance power converter and wireless power transmission systems. This innovative board is specifically designed for wireless charging applications to power small smart devices and IoT products ranging from 0.5W to 30W, utilizing high frequencies in the MHz range, including the ISM unregulated band at 6.78 – 13.56 – 27.12 MHz.
WaveEgg sets itself apart by offering end-to-end efficiency levels significantly higher than traditional systems, enabling a reduction in the overall bill of materials (BoM). At an output of 6W and a switching frequency of 2 MHz, WaveEgg achieves an impressive efficiency of 85%. The design's minimal component requirements further enhance efficiency by mitigating losses associated with non-ideal component behavior.
In addition, the EVB supports high low-load to full-load efficiency using fewer components compared to standard wireless power transfer standards such as Qi and Airfuel technologies. Igor Spinella, the founder and CEO of Eggtronic, emphasizes the significance of WaveEgg in addressing historical challenges related to efficiency and component count for power levels up to 30W. Spinella notes that the WaveEgg 6W LP evaluation board offers engineers a practical and commercially viable platform for developing low-power wireless designs with ease.
WaveEgg's foundation lies in the RISC-V based Eggtronic Power Integrated Controller (EPIC), which enables control of both standard and proprietary power conversion architectures. The EPIC design achieves high efficiency across the entire load range through a proprietary approach that implements zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) and quasi-zero-current-switching (quasi-ZCS) on the transmission side, along with ZVS+ZCS on the receiving side.
