Pickering Electronics, a leading manufacturer of reed relays, has announced the addition of a new single-in-line reed relay to its Series 104. This innovative relay is capable of withstanding 5kV and switching 1.5kV. Inside the relay is a single-pole normally-open contact, also known as '1 Form A'.

The footprint of the relay measures 6.22 x 24.1mm, with a height of 8.1mm above the PCB. "This is particularly advantageous where a compact design is essential, as the devices can stack at just 6.35mm," said Pickering relay specialist Kevin Mallett. "Despite its size, the relay maintains reliable performance."

According to the data sheet, when working with high voltages, it is recommended to have a space of 2mm per 1kV stand-off voltage between the pins of different relays. For example, the 5kV version of the Series 104 should have a gap of 10mm between the pins.

The maximum contact ratings for the relay are 1kV, 25W, and 1.5A, with a life expectancy of more than 108 operations. However, it is important to note that at higher voltages, the current that can be switched is significantly reduced. For instance, the expected life can be 107 operations when switching 1.25kV at 1mA (1.25W), 106 operations at 8mA and 1.25kV (10W), or 5x105 operations when switching 2mA and 1.5kV (3W).

The relay has a maximum bounce time of 1ms, and the contacts release in just 300μs. The part numbers for the Series 104 relay are of the form: 104-1-A-x/5D. The '5' in the part number indicates that this is Pickering's 'Switch No. 5' sub-set of 104 relays, which are the 5kV stand-off types. These relays come in 'Package Type 6', which has a wider contact pin-out spacing compared to some other 104 relays. However, Package Type 2, with coil pins spaced further apart, is available as a special-order option.

The 'x' in the part number is replaced with 5, 12, or 24 depending on the required coil voltage. These correspond to coils with resistances of 220, 500, and 3,000Ω respectively. The 5kV types of the relay are available with or without an integrated diode across the coil. The 'D' suffix indicates diode inclusive parts.

The operation temperature range for the relay is -20 to +85°C. However, there is an option for -40 to +125°C operation in the 104HT... variants, which have higher current coils (125, 500, or 2,500Ω). Custom versions of the relay are also available for operation up to +150°C.

Pickering Electronics envisions the 5kV reed relays being used in various applications such as mixed-signal semiconductor and electronics testers, cable testing, and instrumentation. With over 50 years of experience, Pickering Electronics is a trusted manufacturer based in Essex, UK.

This data sheet covers the 5kV 104 relays among others.
