Debug specialist Lauterbach has recently joined the SOAFEE Special Interest Group with the aim of revolutionizing and expediting the development process of software defined vehicles (SDV). This collaboration marks a significant step towards simplifying and accelerating the advancement of SDV technology.

SOAFEE, established by ARM in 2021, serves as a collaborative platform that brings together companies from the automotive and technology sectors. The consortium has introduced a foundational development platform designed to facilitate seamless software development from the cloud to the automotive edge, supported by a network of commercial partners spanning the automotive software ecosystem.

One of the primary objectives of this initiative is to streamline the transition from software development to deployment, ultimately expediting software projects within the automotive industry. For instance, ARM and Panasonic Automotive Systems have collaborated to develop a software stack under the SOAFEE Scalable Open Architecture For the Embedded Edge program. This collaboration aims to leverage the VirtIO device virtualization framework to separate automotive software development from hardware by implementing standard interfaces for Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).

Lauterbach's TRACE32 debug and trace tools are poised to play a pivotal role in enabling comprehensive debugging of the entire SDV software stack across current and future automotive System on Chips (SoCs), covering the entire lifecycle from virtual electronic control units (ECUs) to physical silicon.

Headquartered in Germany, Lauterbach has also engaged in partnerships with ARM and Corellium to integrate the TRACE32 tools into virtual models of the ARM high-performance Neoverse V3AE cores and Coretex-R82AE real-time cores. This collaboration allows for software development to commence prior to the availability of the physical silicon, enhancing efficiency and accelerating innovation in the automotive sector.

“Whether addressing electrification, driver assistance technologies, or software-defined vehicles (SDV), our TRACE32 debug and trace tools empower developers to drive innovation at a rapid pace and prepare for the future of automotive technology,” remarked Norbert Weiss, Managing Director at Lauterbach.
