Murata Manufacturing and Michelin have recently entered into a significant licensing agreement that will see the integration of fourth-generation Murata RFID tags into Michelin automotive tires. This collaboration aims to meet European legislation requirements and enhance tire management, sustainability, security, and traceability.

With the increasing connectivity of objects in the digital age, the integration of RFID technology in tires is becoming essential for tracing their origins and ensuring efficient recycling processes. European regulations such as the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) are driving the adoption of digital product passports (DPP) for products, including tires, to improve their circularity and traceability.

By incorporating RFID tags into tires, manufacturers can not only comply with European standards but also streamline logistics within the tire and automobile industry. This partnership between Michelin and Murata signifies a long-standing collaboration in developing tag technology for tires, with the latest agreement enabling Murata to produce generation 4 RFID tire tags using Michelin's patented integration process.

As the RFID-enabled tires enter mass production in early 2025, tire manufacturers worldwide will have the opportunity to implement these tags into their products with the support of Murata. The company will continue to provide access to RFID systems through its id-Bridge software, further enhancing the efficiency and traceability of tire operations.

Laurent Couturier, RFID system designer at Michelin, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "RFID technology is a key element in improving the efficiency and optimization of tire operations. This tag is the unique way to identify tires, from cradle to grave, in a consistent manner, thus responding to the ecological challenges of our time."

Tetsuo Kawakatsu, Director of the RFID Business Department at Murata, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, saying, "Michelin is one of the world’s leading tire manufacturers, and this partnership will help produce solutions capable of overcoming significant challenges in the global tire market, leading to advancements in operation efficiency and supply chain reliability."
