Infineon Technologies has introduced a cutting-edge gate driver tailored to support the transition from 12V to 48V brushless DC motors.

The Infineon MOTIX TLE9140EQW gate driver IC is specifically designed for motor control applications with higher voltage demands ranging from 24V up to a maximum of 72V. This innovation is crucial in scenarios where enhanced system reliability and faster switching behavior are imperative.

Designed to complement the MOTIX MCU TLE987x and TLE989x 32-bit motor control SoC devices, the gate driver is also compatible with 48V BLDC drivers commonly found in the market. Its versatility makes it suitable for various applications such as pumps, fans, windshield wipers, HVAC modules, and e-compressors in automotive designs.

Moreover, the TLE9140 can serve as a 3-phase motor gate driver in a wide array of applications, including commercial, construction, and agricultural vehicles, as well as light electric vehicles like eBikes, eScooters, and eMotorcycles.

Andreas Doll, Senior Vice President, and General Manager Smart Power at Infineon, emphasized the significance of the new motor gate driver, stating, "Our motor gate driver IC allows customers to easily scale their existing 12V MOTIX TLE987x and TLE989x motor control designs to 24V or 48V systems. The TLE9140EQW facilitates the reuse of hardware and software designs, enabling our customers to expedite their time-to-market and optimize development costs when transitioning to 24/48V systems."

The gate driver IC boasts functional safety compliant with ISO 26262 ASIL B standards and comes in a compact TS-DSO-32 package. With a high voltage capability of up to 110V, a gate driver capability of ~230 nC/MOSFET up to 20 kHz, and SPI communication, the IC offers a comprehensive set of features.

Furthermore, the TLE9140 incorporates Infineon's patented gate shaping function, an adaptive MOSFET control mechanism that can compensate for MOSFET parameter variations within the system. This feature automatically adjusts the gate current to achieve the desired switching behavior, optimizing the system in terms of electromagnetic emissions (EMI) and power dissipation.

To streamline the evaluation and design-in process, Infineon provides a range of software and tools alongside its MOTIX motor control ICs. The user-friendly TLE9140 evaluation board facilitates rapid evaluation and prototyping, while a configuration wizard and device driver for the TLE9140 offer a simple API for generating control frames for the external bridge driver via SPI, both available free of charge.

The MOTIX TLE9140 motor gate driver is now available for purchase, offering advanced features and functionalities to meet the evolving needs of motor control applications.
