Protean Electric, a pioneering company in electric vehicle technology, is spearheading a £5.5m (€6.5m) project aimed at developing a production line for in-wheel motors (IWM). The project, named PULSE (Power electronics Upscale for Localisation and Sustainable Electrification), is a collaborative effort with Unipart Manufacturing to establish a pilot line for the production of power electronics for Protean's innovative in-wheel motors.

Unipart Manufacturing, renowned for its advanced manufacturing expertise, will play a crucial role in creating a cutting-edge flexible assembly line capable of producing a variety of inverters and converters, including Viritech’s advanced DC/DC 800V converter. This collaboration will also incorporate sensor technology from Transense and magnet recycling processes from Hypromag, further enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the IWM technology through research contributions from Coventry University and the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG).

The funding for this ambitious project has been secured through a Collaborative Research and Development grant from the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC). Andrew Whitehead, the Chief Executive Officer of Protean Electric, expressed his excitement about the selection of project PULSE by the APC and the government, emphasizing its role in supporting Protean's leadership in electric vehicle innovation from their UK development center. Whitehead highlighted the significance of Protean's state-of-the-art in-wheel motors in enhancing the range, user experience, and affordability of electric vehicles.

Protean Electric boasts an impressive portfolio of over 320 patents across 75 patent families and operates in multiple countries, including the UK, China, Turkey, and the USA. As part of the BEDEO Group, Protean Electric continues to drive advancements in electric vehicle technology, positioning itself as a key player in the global transition towards sustainable transportation.
