Samtec, a leading manufacturer of electronic connectors, has recently unveiled a new line of RF connectors that offer a unique mounting solution for printed circuit boards (PCBs). Unlike traditional connectors that are soldered onto the PCB, these connectors are designed to be bolted to the edge of the board, providing a more secure and reliable connection.

The compact design of these connectors is a standout feature, measuring only 9.5mm from side to side when mounted on the PCB and less than 8mm from top to bottom. This streamlined profile makes them ideal for applications where space is limited, such as high-frequency test and measurement setups and evaluation boards used in laboratory settings.

According to Samtec, these connectors are available in three series, each offering a different inner diameter for the coaxial signal path. The connectors are attached to the PCB through two holes using provided screws and a tapped strengthening plate, ensuring a sturdy connection that can withstand repeated use.

One of the key advantages of these connectors is their surface-mount design, which allows for easy alignment of the launch pin with the circuit trace. This alignment not only simplifies the installation process but also helps to ensure proper ground alignment, reducing the risk of RF leakage and improving signal integrity.

Samtec claims that these connectors can be attached, removed, and reattached to the PCB up to 500 times without causing any damage to the board. The recommended board thickness for optimal performance is between 0.04 to 0.1 inches (approximately 1-2.5mm), with a suggested screw mounting torque of 0.5 to 0.8 inch-pounds (around 0.06 to 0.09 Nm).
