Siemens, a global leader in technology and innovation, has announced plans to centralize its research and development activities in Germany with the establishment of a new €100 million centre located north of Munich. The Siemens Technology Centre (STC) in Garching, situated alongside the prestigious Technical University of Munich (TUM) and other renowned research institutions, will be dedicated to advancing industrial artificial intelligence research.

The first building of the STC, set within the Garching Research Campus, is expected to accommodate 450 researchers, including 150 from TUM. The company aims to inaugurate a second building complex by 2027, which will house over 630 Siemens Technology researchers and intellectual property specialists, making the STC the largest among the twelve central Siemens research hubs worldwide.

With approximately 28,000 individuals already employed at the hub, the Garching Research Campus stands as one of Europe's largest centers for science, research, and education. Siemens plans to leverage this ecosystem by engaging in collaborative initiatives with TUM, such as hackathons, lectures, and the Makerspace, to foster a more open and innovative environment at the STC.

According to Peter Körte, Chief Technology and Chief Strategy Officer of Siemens, "No one can solve the current challenges alone. We must accelerate collaboration with our customers and partners in the early stages of development. The Siemens Technology Center, located on the same campus with TUM, international research institutions, and companies, benefits from an excellent environment and will strengthen Germany’s global role in cutting-edge research."

Thomas F. Hofmann, President of the Technical University of Munich, emphasized the significance of the collaboration between Siemens and TUM, stating, "The collaboration between Siemens and TUM as part of the Industry on Campus strategy shows how a leading industrial partnership can bridge the gap between academic excellence and industrial innovation to work together on the challenges of our time and develop powerful disruptive solutions."

Markus Blume, Bavaria’s State Minister for Science and the Arts, expressed optimism about the joint efforts, saying, "Two international champions made in Bavaria are joining forces – success is therefore inevitable. At the Siemens Technology Center in Garching, talented people from science and industry are researching and working together under one roof to create fertile ground for innovation and technological strength."

The development of the STC was managed internally, with Siemens Real Estate overseeing the design and construction process. The facility is set to receive a "GOLD" certification according to the LEED sustainability standard, highlighting Siemens' commitment to environmental responsibility. Data analytics and artificial intelligence will play a crucial role at the STC, enabling tasks such as programming assistance, early detection of production issues, and facilitating natural language communication between humans and machines.

In line with its dedication to innovation, Siemens has increased its spending on research and development (R&D) by approximately €600 million, reaching a total of €6.2 billion in 2023. The company's focus areas include Simulation & Digital Twin, Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence, Connectivity & Edge, Future of Automation, and Cybersecurity & Trust, all integrated within the Xcelerator open digital business platform.
