Scandi telecoms operator Telenor has recently unveiled a cutting-edge test lab in Karlskrona, Sweden, aimed at assisting customers in comprehending the behavior of connected IoT products prior to deployment.

The Telenor IoT Test Lab features a Faraday radio cage meticulously designed for testing various networks and grants access to the four Nordic Telenor operators, namely Telenor Sweden, Telenor Norway, DNA (Finland), and Telenor Denmark, all conveniently located in one place.

Equipped with advanced steering and control systems, the lab enables precise control over the available operator, access technology, and signal levels. This capability allows for the simulation of a wide array of network scenarios in a controlled and repeatable manner.

Building on the success of IoT Complete, a groundbreaking end-to-end connectivity IoT service introduced a year ago, Telenor's single subscription empowers enterprises to globally connect IoT devices using a configuration-only approach. The subscription encompasses connectivity hardware, mobile connectivity, cloud integration, and end-user applications, all seamlessly managed through a unified portal and set of APIs.

Testing plays a pivotal role in any development project, particularly in cellular IoT, where ensuring the reliability of devices across diverse environments and conditions is paramount before market release. By conducting thorough IoT device testing pre-deployment, customers can expedite time to market, enhance test coverage, and identify potential issues early on to avert costly troubleshooting once products have flooded the market.

Over the years, the IoT landscape has witnessed the emergence of numerous advanced connectivity technologies such as LTE-M, NB-IoT, and 5G, offering superior coverage, energy efficiency, and data throughput. However, these advancements introduce complexities and necessitate profiling and tuning of settings to optimize performance for each customer's specific use case.

Customized testing tailored to individual customer requirements can be conducted either on-site or remotely by dispatching devices to the Telenor IoT test manager. Additionally, Telenor offers automated long-term testing services to streamline the testing process.

Besides its technical prowess, Telenor provides experienced test managers to assist in test planning, result analysis, and proposing solutions for any encountered issues during testing. Typical test scenarios encompass evaluating radio signal behavior, network disconnection responses, technology or operator switching, recovery speed, adherence to GSMA efficiency guidelines, energy efficiency under varying network conditions, signal strengths, and handling of diverse roaming scenarios.
