Würth Elektronik, a leading manufacturer of electronic components, has recently unveiled two families of surface-mount multi-channel galvanic isolators designed specifically for digital signals. These isolators provide a reliable and efficient solution for signal isolation in various applications.

WPME-CDIP Family

The WPME-CDIP family consists of isolators with four 100Mbit/s isolated channels. One of the key features of these devices is the built-in dc-dc converter, which enables isolated power transfer from one side to the other. Depending on the specific version, the isolators can have different combinations of digital isolator directions. Some versions allow for all channels to transmit signals from input to output, while others have three channels in that direction and one returning, or two channels in each direction.

Additionally, the isolators offer a pin that allows users to select between 3.3V or 5V power at the output, with a maximum power output of 650mW. The isolation capability of these devices is up to 5kVrms, and they comply with EN55032 Class B / CISPR-32 standards for conducted and radiated EMI. The same pin that selects the power output also determines the logic levels on the isolated side. The WPME-CDIP isolators come in a compact 10.3 x 7.5 x 2.5mm SOIC-16 package.

WPME-CDIS Family

The WPME-CDIS family shares many similarities with the WPME-CDIP family, but with one key difference. These isolators require power on both sides of the barrier, as there is no internal dc-dc converter. However, they still offer impressive data rates of up to 150Mbit/s. The packaging for the WPME-CDIS isolators is the same as the WPME-CDIP isolators, with a 10.3 x 7.5 x 2.5mm SOIC-16WB package providing 5kVrms of isolation. Additionally, there are two-channel models available in a smaller 4.9 x 3.9 x 1.5mm SOIC-8NB package, offering 3.75kVrms of isolation.

Both families of isolators include variants that default to logic-high on the isolated side if there is no connection to the input side, as well as variants that default to logic-low. These isolators are designed to operate in a wide temperature range of -40 to +125°C. However, it is important to note that the versions with the dc-dc converter cannot deliver full power above 85°C.

Würth Elektronik emphasizes the benefits of these digital isolators, stating, "Digital isolators are the perfect solution if fast and robust signal isolation is called for. The isolators feature high immunity to system noise with CMTI [common mode transient immunity] of ±150kV/µs." The company envisions these isolators being used in a variety of applications, including communication buses, switch-mode power supplies, motor controllers, testing systems, measuring systems, battery management, and photovoltaic inverters.
