NEC has recently unveiled a groundbreaking RAN autonomous optimization technology designed to dynamically manage 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN) based on the status of individual user terminals. This innovation aims to enhance the efficiency of various applications, including the remote control of robots and vehicles.

The company plans to integrate this cutting-edge technology into RAN Intelligent Controllers (RIC) and initiate demonstration tests utilizing this technology by March 2025. This development comes at a time when there is a growing push towards digital transformation (DX) by leveraging advanced technologies like 5G, AI, and IoT to address labor shortages and boost productivity.

One of the key challenges faced when employing technologies for remote robot and vehicle control is ensuring seamless two-way communication for monitoring status and issuing control instructions within specific time constraints. Any delays in communication can lead to operational interruptions due to safety protocols, resulting in decreased productivity.

To overcome these obstacles, NEC's RAN autonomous optimization technology employs AI algorithms to analyze communication requirements and radio quality variations on a per-user terminal basis. By dynamically adjusting RAN parameters such as modulation schemes, resource allocation, and maximum allowable delays, the technology optimizes communication for each user terminal, enhancing overall system performance.

Unlike traditional 5G networks where RAN parameters are fixed network-wide, this innovative approach tailors parameters to individual user terminals, thereby improving the efficiency of diverse applications. By enabling dynamic control of RAN parameters based on application needs, the technology facilitates seamless optimization even in environments with a mix of different applications.
