E-peas, a Belgium-based company, has successfully raised €17.5 million to expand its energy harvesting chip business. In a recent interview with Nick Flaherty at eeNews Europe, CEO and co-founder Geoffroy Gosset shared insights into the company's future plans, which include the development of innovative products like an image sensor powered by energy harvesting.

The substantial funding injection coincides with the introduction of e-peas' ultra-low microcontroller, capable of harnessing energy from various local sources such as solar, RF, vibration, and thermal energy. Gosset highlighted the company's commitment to enhancing its product portfolio and expanding global sales and customer support with the newly acquired funds.

With a diverse range of 18 different devices, e-peas offers solutions tailored to specific market segments. These devices not only support various energy sources but also incorporate additional features to meet the unique requirements of different applications. For instance, the company provides USB charging capabilities for indoor solar applications like battery-free remote controls, catering to customers like Samsung.

The recent funding round, led by Otium Capital, will enable e-peas to venture into the microcontroller and image sensor markets. Joining Otium Capital are new investors Nomainvest and the European Innovation Council EIC Fund, along with existing backers like KBC Focus Fund and The Faktory. This strategic move aligns with the company's vision to become a comprehensive supplier of essential IC components for ultra-low-power systems.

At the CES show in Las Vegas earlier this year, e-peas unveiled its latest achievement – the EDMS105N low-power microcontroller. Boasting a 24MHz ARM Cortex M0 core and exceptional power efficiency, this microcontroller sets new standards in energy consumption for Cortex-M0 MCUs. The company's focus on delivering cutting-edge technology with superior power efficiency is evident in the EDMS105N's impressive performance metrics.

Looking ahead, e-peas is exploring future technologies, with plans to introduce an energy-harvesting-powered image sensor by 2025. This innovative sensor is designed to offer enhanced power efficiency for edge AI applications, enabling the extraction of valuable information from images while consuming minimal power. By continuously pushing the boundaries of low-power design, e-peas aims to revolutionize the landscape of energy-efficient IC components.
