The Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor developed by Nuvoton is set to transform the way people and objects are recognized in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. This breakthrough is made possible by Nuvoton's innovative pixel design and advanced distance calculation and image signal processor (ISP) technology.
By harnessing Nuvoton's proprietary CMOS image sensor pixel and CCD memory technology, the latest ToF sensor boasts four memories within each 5.6-square-micrometer pixel, surpassing the three memories found in traditional ToF sensors. This enhancement enables the sensor to achieve precise distance sensing by efficiently managing pulse light sources and capturing background light signals. As a result, it can accurately determine the position and shape of individuals and objects across different lighting conditions.
Featuring four embedded memories per pixel, Nuvoton's cutting-edge ToF sensor is capable of generating distance images in a single frame. This groundbreaking design minimizes motion blur and measurement inaccuracies in moving objects by analyzing distance data from four distinct imaging signals within a single frame. Such functionality is particularly beneficial for tasks that demand real-time object detection and identification, like obstacle recognition in autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and airbag intensity adjustment in vehicles.
The new ToF sensor comes equipped with an integrated distance calculation circuit and a signal correction ISP, enabling it to deliver rapid and precise distance (3D) images at speeds of up to 120 frames per second (QVGA) without any lag. This eliminates the burden of distance calculations on the system processor, leading to reduced processing load and faster response times for sensing systems. Furthermore, the sensor can simultaneously produce both distance (3D) and infrared (2D) images, catering to applications that necessitate high accuracy and recognition/authentication capabilities.
