Delft Circuits, a company based in the Netherlands, has recently unveiled a groundbreaking High-Density Input/Output (HD I/O) system designed specifically for the scaling up of quantum computers. This turnkey system boasts 256 channels and a modular design that allows for seamless scalability without the need for larger quantum refrigerators. The significance of this development lies in its ability to address the wiring density bottleneck that often hinders the advancement of quantum computer hardware.

One of the key challenges in quantum computing is the increasing number of wires required as the system scales up in terms of qubits and computation power. The HD I/O system from Delft Circuits directly tackles this issue by offering a comprehensive solution that eliminates the complexities and time-consuming integration typically associated with coax cables used for high-density connectivity in quantum computers. This system allows for the control of up to 64 qubits per module and offers a modular loader design that enables expansion in increments of 32 channels.

The modular nature of the HD I/O system means that it can double the channel capacity without necessitating a larger quantum refrigerator. Moreover, this system comes at a lower price point compared to conventional coaxial cables, with the closest high-density coax alternative offering 168 channels per port. This affordability and efficiency make the HD I/O system an attractive option for researchers and developers in the quantum computing field.

The HD I/O system is compatible with the modular Cri/oFlex flexible strip-line system, which supports various types of qubits including superconducting, spin, and photonic qubits. The system comprises three Cri/oFlex modules with an interconnect module that includes electrical and microwave interfaces, vacuum feedthroughs, and thermal anchoring. Additionally, there are two flex laminates for signal transmission and on-flex integrated components for signal conditioning.

Notably, DARPA in the US and OrangeQS in the Netherlands have already begun utilizing the HD I/O system for scaling quantum systems, from computers to test systems. Dr. Thorsten Last, Executive Director at OrangeQS, emphasized the importance of scalable cryogenic I/O solutions for the quantum computing industry, stating that coaxial solutions are not dense enough for utility-scale quantum chips. The integration of filters in the Cri/oFlex system enhances reliability and simplifies the adoption of higher density cabling solutions.
