STMicroelectronics has recently unveiled a cutting-edge reference board designed for 750W motor drive applications. The EVLDRIVE101-HPD (High Power Density) motor drive reference design boasts a compact circular PCB with a 50mm diameter, making it ideal for a wide range of compact electronic devices.

The board is equipped with a 3-phase gate driver, STM32G0 microcontroller, and a powerful 750W power stage. One of the standout features of this reference design is its incredibly low power consumption in sleep mode, drawing less than 1uA. This efficiency, combined with its small form factor, allows the board to seamlessly integrate into various devices such as hairdryers, handheld vacuums, power tools, fans, drones, robots, and industrial equipment like pumps and process-automation systems.

The STDRIVE101 3-phase gate driver included in the design offers developers the flexibility to choose between different motor drive control strategies, including trapezoidal or field-oriented control (FOC), with options for sensor-based or sensorless rotor-position detection. With three-half bridges and a 600 mA source/sink capability, the STDRIVE101 IC can operate within a wide voltage range of 5.5V to 75V, catering to a variety of low-voltage applications.

Developers can leverage the STM32G0 microcontroller's single-wire debug (SWD) interface for seamless interaction, while the support for direct firmware updates enables quick bug fixes and feature enhancements. The power stage of the EVLDRIVE101-HPD reference design features STL220N6F7 60V STripFET F7 MOSFETs, known for their efficiency and ease of integration with the motor due to their low typical Rds(on) of 1.2mΩ.

In addition to its performance capabilities, the reference board also prioritizes safety and efficiency. The fast-acting power-on circuitry disconnects the power source when idle, conserving energy and extending battery life in portable applications. The driver IC incorporates various protection mechanisms, including Vds monitoring of the power-stage MOSFETs, under-voltage lockout (UVLO), overtemperature protection, and cross-conduction prevention, ensuring the system's reliability under diverse operating conditions.
