NASA Contracts Blue Origin for Mars Satellite Mission

NASA has awarded contracts to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket company to launch two satellites into orbit around Mars. The launch date is set for August 2024, marking the first time that Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket will be utilized for a mission of this kind. Despite the relatively low contract value of $79 million, NASA is willing to take the risk.

The mission, named ESCAPADE (Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers), aims to study the escape of Mars' atmosphere and the dynamics of plasma acceleration. The satellites, weighing approximately half a ton each, will be carried by the New Glenn rocket. Standing at an impressive height of 320 feet with a diameter of 23 feet, the New Glenn rocket has a payload capacity of 45 metric tons. Its inaugural launch was originally planned four years ago.

While Elon Musk has been at the forefront of Mars exploration, his recent attempts to reach the planet have been unsuccessful, with his last two rockets exploding during launch. In the past, Musk has referred to Bezos as a "dilettante" in the realm of space exploration. With this mission, Bezos undoubtedly hopes to prove Musk wrong and demonstrate the capabilities of Blue Origin's technology.

The contract awarded to Blue Origin signifies NASA's confidence in the company's ability to deliver the satellites to Mars successfully. The ESCAPADE mission holds great scientific potential, as it will provide valuable insights into the escape mechanisms of Mars' atmosphere and the behavior of plasma in space.
