The Broadband Forum has recently released an updated specification aimed at providing broadband service providers (BSPs) with enhanced visibility and control over devices and applications connected via a Thread network. The Broadband Forum TR-181 data model — Device:2.19 — has undergone revisions to offer comprehensive support for managed smart home deployments that utilize low-power mesh networking. By adopting this updated data model, BSPs can remotely communicate with and manage Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) like modems, routers, or wireless access points, as well as diagnose issues with Thread-connected devices.

According to Broadband Forum CEO Craig Thomas, "Interoperability of devices is a hot topic in the smart home, and we recognize the importance of our role in facilitating communication between all Thread-connected devices. In addition, the updated specification brings the promise of improved management of various smart home technologies, including Wi-Fi HaLow."

One of the key features of the updated specification is a revamped data model for cellular radio interfaces designed to support Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) use cases. This enhancement allows broadband CPE to make more effective use of cellular connectivity and aligns with deployment models that leverage the Broadband Forum’s USP/TR-369 protocol for management, telemetry, and automation.

Device: 2.19 also extends its support to the Wi-Fi Alliance’s Data Elements Release 4, introducing standardized Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that enhance the monitoring and troubleshooting of Wi-Fi performance. The inclusion of Wi-Fi HaLow elements further broadens coverage to encompass long-range, low-power devices.

Jason Walls, Co-Director of Broadband Forum’s Connected User Work Area at QA Cafe, emphasized, “Device:2.19 underscores our commitment to evolving in line with the needs of network operators. By offering support for next-generation smart home technology, Wi-Fi performance metrics, and Fixed Wireless Access, we are equipping BSPs with powerful tools to deliver exceptional broadband experiences."

The TR-181 Device:2.19 data model maintains its broad applicability across residential gateways, CPE, and other access devices, supporting flexible deployment and lifecycle management within a unified, standards-based framework. This comprehensive update is poised to empower BSPs in navigating the complexities of managing smart home deployments and optimizing broadband services for end-users.
