Open source distributed ledger blockchain technology (DLT) developer Iota is making waves in the industry by powering a digital passport designed to track battery cells used in electric vehicles. This innovative solution is a result of Iota supplying its DLT blockchain technology to Eviden in France for the Eviden Digital Passport Solution (EDPS), which aims to monitor EV batteries from production to end of life.

The EDPS is among the pioneering DLT-based Digital Product Passports (DPPs) available in the market, setting a new standard for utilizing IOTA’s technology at scale. By offering comprehensive data on a product's life cycle, from its origin and materials to manufacturing, usage, repairs, and end-of-life recycling, the EDPS enhances transparency and traceability in the supply chain.

The system records the complete transaction history of each EV battery in a chronological chain, ensuring the data's immutability and reliability. Through efficient data management via DLT, the EDPS minimizes data usage while validating the authenticity of information, reducing the risk of non-compliance with environmental standards and regulations.

Moreover, the EDPS promotes circularity and sustainability by encouraging continuous reuse and repurposing of products, thereby contributing to a more resilient and localized supply chain. By providing insights into a product's durability and performance, DPPs add an extra layer of compliance and accountability, aligning with EU requirements on sustainability, safety, and disposal of batteries.

Eviden, a subsidiary of Atos, has leveraged its industry expertise to navigate the complexities of digital product passports, starting with EV batteries as the initial product category. The Passport Creator, suitable for any automotive manufacturer, incorporates a blockchain node to capture essential information at the outset, ensuring thorough documentation.

The Passport Distributor, utilizing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), offers web- and app-based access to the EDPS for smaller companies, facilitating broader adoption and ease of use. Through smart contracts powered by Tangle technology, the system efficiently manages large data volumes and high transaction rates required by the EDPS, tracking the entire product life cycle from production to recycling.

By ensuring compliance with various EU regulations and directives related to sustainable products and corporate sustainability, the EDPS plays a crucial role in promoting responsible practices and transparency in the industry. Iota's collaboration with Eviden signifies a strategic partnership aimed at exploring new applications in global digital trade, self-sovereign identity, and data monetization, further expanding the potential of DLT technology.

As Iota continues to drive innovation in the blockchain space, the recent establishment of a research lab at Imperial College London underscores the commitment to developing new use cases for the technology. This forward-looking approach, combined with the expertise of partners like Eviden, sets the stage for transformative advancements in product tracking and supply chain management.
