ABB, a leading technology company, has developed a new series of liquid cooled synchronous reluctance motors that achieve IEC international efficiency class 5 (IE5). These motors, branded as 'SynRM', are available in liquid-cooled versions ranging from 37 to 710kW (400V in IEC 200-315 frame sizes, with aluminum and steel options available upon request).

"A major advantage of the IE5 SynRM liquid-cooled motors is that they are much more efficient than the traditional liquid-cooled induction motors currently in use," stated the company. "The cost of energy to run a motor accounts for approximately 97% of its total cost of ownership. IE5 motors have 40 percent lower energy losses compared to commonly used IE3 motors. This means that selecting an IE5 motor instead of an IE3 motor often results in a payback time of less than one year."

One of the models in the series, a 240kW IE5 SynRM motor in frame size 315, weighs only 870kg, which is almost half the weight of a corresponding IE3 induction motor.

Aside from their increased efficiency, these motors also offer benefits such as reduced heat-injection into the local environment. This makes them suitable for operation in small spaces, including marine propulsion systems and thrusters. Additionally, the motors do not require fans or ventilation, which helps minimize local air disturbance.

ABB ensures the durability of these motors by using seals to keep out moisture, dirt, and dust. The motors also feature a smooth outer surface that discourages dust build-up.

Aside from marine propulsion, these motors are expected to find applications in industries such as rubber, plastics, food (specifically chocolate conching), and beverage production.
