OmniOn Power, headquartered in Plano, Texas, has introduced a new line of point-of-load (POL) modules that offer enhanced design flexibility within a standard 10 x 10 mm footprint. The company's FPLX non-isolated DC-DC converter series, ranging from 15A to 30A, is designed to deliver high efficiency and power density for a variety of applications, including networking, data centers, telecom, and industrial settings, with an output starting from 0.45V.

The roots of OmniOn Power trace back to its origins as the US business of ABB Power Conversion. Over the years, the company has emphasized the importance of power density in printed circuit board (PCB) design across various industries. The compact footprint of the FPLX modules is particularly advantageous in scenarios where space optimization is critical.

The FPLX015 (15A), FPLX020 (20A), and FPLX030 (30A) modules, all featuring a 10 mm by 10 mm footprint, boast impressive power densities of 97 A/in², 129 A/in², and 194 A/in², respectively. This standardized footprint allows for seamless design flexibility, enabling customers to adjust current levels throughout the design process to align with the specific requirements of their end applications.

Operating within a 6 to 14V input range, the DC-DC converter series offers output voltage ranges of 0.45 to 3.6V (FPLX015 and FPLX020) and 0.45 to 2.0V (FPLX030). These modules deliver efficiencies of up to 88% for typical 12V to 1V conversions, ensuring tight voltage accuracy and minimal derating under standard operating conditions.

Vito Savino, OmniOn Power's data center and wireline segment leader, highlighted the significance of maximizing space utilization on PCBs in today's technology-driven landscape. He emphasized how the high efficiencies and power densities of the FPLX-series DC/DC converters can liberate valuable space, empowering board designers to optimize layouts for enhanced functionality, especially in demanding applications like networking infrastructure.

The FPLX-series DC-DC modules, which are IPC9592-qualified and part of the DLynx III range, feature a digital PMBus interface for real-time monitoring of critical data such as voltage, current, and temperature. These modules offer the flexibility to switch between forced continuous conduction mode and diode emulation mode, enhancing overall efficiency.

To assist engineers in selecting the most suitable DC-DC converter module for their designs, OmniOn provides a cloud-based Power Module Wizard tool. This tool enables users to choose components, create schematics, and conduct simulations to evaluate efficiency, transient response, and ripple. Additionally, the Digital Power Insights tool facilitates the configuration of PMBus control and monitoring parameters, ensuring optimal performance of board-mounted power supplies at every stage of the design process.
