The European Research Council (ERC) has recently revealed the recipients of 100 new Proof of Concept Grants in the initial round of the 2024 competition. This marks a significant milestone as the total number of European proof of concept grants awarded has now reached 2000 since the program's inception in 2011.
Astrophysicist Nanda Rea, affiliated with the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Spain, has been selected to lead a groundbreaking project named DeepSpacePULSE, focusing on deep space exploration. The project aims to revolutionize spacecraft navigation by developing a more efficient and autonomous system utilizing pulsars as precise timekeepers.
Through the utilization of ERC Proof of Concept funding, Prof. Nanda Rea and her team will assess the feasibility of employing compact pulsar stars as a navigation foundation. These pulsars exhibit remarkable stability, serving as ideal cosmic clocks that could potentially replace traditional navigation methods reliant on Earth-based communication.
Building upon her prior research supported by an ERC Consolidator Grant, Prof. Nanda Rea's team has honed their expertise in identifying pulsar stars, laying the groundwork for a space-based GPS system. The DeepSpacePULSE initiative seeks to develop a compact, lightweight navigation unit that could enhance space navigation systems by a factor of ten, making it competitive in both public and private space sectors.
The distribution of the 2024 Proof of Concept projects highlights a diverse array of research endeavors across Europe. The UK leads with 15 projects, followed closely by the Netherlands with 14, and Italy with 12. Other countries such as France, Germany, and Spain each secured 10 projects, showcasing the continent's commitment to innovation and scientific advancement.
While the majority of projects focus on life sciences, there are notable exceptions such as the development of monolithic quantum control circuitry in Austria and wireless communication technologies in Spain and Ireland. These projects underscore the ERC's dedication to fostering cutting-edge research in various fields.
