Swiss electrical measurement technology specialist LEM has recently unveiled its new €15.7m ($17m) plant in Penang, Malaysia. The facility, spanning 11,800 sqm, currently employs 70 individuals, with plans to expand the workforce to over 200 by March 2025 and eventually surpass 500 employees. LEM anticipates that sales from the factory, specializing in current and voltage sensors, will exceed €200m.

The cutting-edge factory is equipped with a state-of-the-art logistic system, featuring automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) that efficiently transport components from the warehouse to the advanced production lines. Additionally, LEM Malaysia is set to become the testing ground for the company's new ERP system and aims to generate a significant portion of its energy through solar panels. Future expansion plans include utilizing an additional 5,000 sqm of land to accommodate the growing operations.

Frank Rehfeld, CEO of LEM, emphasized the importance of enhancing operational resilience and global presence through strategic investments. He stated, "In uncertain times, it is crucial for LEM to bolster its capabilities and enhance customer service. By focusing on cutting-edge production facilities and skilled personnel, we aim to deliver top-quality products that cater to the evolving needs of the industry."

Andreas Hürlimann, Chairman of the Board of Directors at LEM, expressed optimism about the impact of the new facility on the company's integrated current sensing business. He highlighted the significance of having a facility in the region that enables in-house semiconductor testing, emphasizing the potential for growth and innovation in the sector.

Furthermore, LEM's commitment to sustainability is evident in the design and operation of the new plant. The facility adheres to the Green Building Index (GBI), a recognized green rating tool in Malaysia. With 300kW of solar energy systems already in place and an additional 400kW planned for 2026, the factory incorporates rainwater harvesting and building automation to optimize energy efficiency. This initiative aligns with LEM's CO2 roadmap, reflecting the company's dedication to fostering a more sustainable future for its customers and society at large.
