Leti Joins Japan's Leading-Edge Semiconductor Technology Centre

Leti, a renowned research institute based in France, is set to join Japan's Leading-Edge Semiconductor Technology Centre (LSTC), according to a report by the Nikkei. The LSTC comprises Tokyo University, Japan's Riken Institute, several other Japanese universities, and Rapidus, a Japanese startup aiming for a 2nm process.

"Leti and the LSTC wish to establish a long-term and sustainable collaboration in various advanced semiconductor fields, including materials, devices, processes, and technology," stated Leti. The goal is to strengthen global collaboration in the semiconductor industry over the next decade and jointly define long-term R&D roadmaps.

Leti's primary role within the LSTC will be the development of new transistor structures for 1.4-1nm processes. This contribution will be crucial in advancing semiconductor technology and pushing the boundaries of miniaturization.

Rapidus, in collaboration with IBM and Imec, is currently working on developing a 2nm process. The company aims to have a 2nm pilot line operational by April 2025 and a volume 2nm line in Hokkaido by 2027. This ambitious project aligns with the LSTC's mission to drive innovation and stay at the forefront of semiconductor technology.

The partnership between Leti and the LSTC signifies a significant step forward in global collaboration within the semiconductor industry. By combining the expertise and resources of leading institutions and companies, breakthroughs in materials, devices, processes, and technology can be achieved. This collaboration will not only benefit Japan but also contribute to the advancement of semiconductor technology worldwide.
